Oh, how I love The Year Of Secret Assignments
. Its design doesn't do it justice, nor does the description I'm about to give. Both make it seem frivolous, and it's not. It's a superbly well crafted book with well developed, intelligent, caring characters. The three protagonists are Australian high school students, all girls, who (on orders of their English teacher) start corresponding with boys from a rival high school. The entire novel consists of letters, emails, and excerpts from the notebooks of these various characters. You see? It sounds silly. But it's fantastic. Really. It's also perfectly appropriate for younger teens.
