I usually dislike books that originate as movies. But there's something magical about A. Lamorisse's The Red Balloon
. It includes spectacular, full-page photographs (some black and white, some color, some a mixture of the two) taken during the production of the film. And the story of the friendship that develops between a boy and his balloon, and the steps they take to protect each other, is so compelling, and so simply told. There's a lot of text for a picture book, which is why I've also labeled it middle-grade. But even at very early ages, my girls loved the photos and story.
