gets my vote for craziest picture book around. A cranky old man gets grumpy with his nurturing--or is she?--wife, then drops dead. His wife buries him in the pumpkin patch, then moves away. Young Jack and his grandmother move in, and the old man's ghost haunts them, demanding the perfect pumpkin pie. The ghost whirls and kvetches and takes out his eyeball. The language is picture-book perfect, with refrains that are spooky and musical. If you don't mind images of disembodied eyeballs and impish spiders, this is the book for you. I defy you to have more fun reading a book aloud.
